Ives and Copland:
A listener's guide

Daniel Felsenfeld
Includes a full length BMG Classics CD

This first volume of Amadeus Press's new series Parallel Lives confronts two American composers with vastly different familial and educational backgrounds, Ives, a New Englander and a Yalie, and Copland, a Brooklyn boy who became one of Nadia Boulanger's first students. It will initiate those who are new to classical music, or to the work of these quintessentially American composers, creating new audiences and delighting people who are already familiar with their art.

The reading and listening experience is a success from start to finish. The satiny cover of this paperback with its generous font size charmed me before I had read a word. The writing is vivid, personal and concise. It is a great opportunity to learn about both men, through their biographies and thoughts about their music from a composer who shares his enthusiasm in a style that is accessible and friendly. The performances on the accompanying CD are well chosen musical examples; the book can be read in a sitting or two. It contains suggestions for further listening.

It will make a great gift, and an addition to your own collection. You can refer to it the way opera lovers read a libretto before attending the opera, or maybe take it on a trip for relaxation. You can never have too much music. Bravo to Amadeus, and thank you to Daniel Felsenfeld.
