Books About Tomatis 1. Depardieu, A Biography, Paul Chutkow, Knopf, 1994, New York, a chapter entitled Dr. Mozart outlines his experience of working with Tomatis, to whom Depardieu says he owes his career. 2. The Power of Sound, Joshua Leeds, Healing Arts Press, Rochester, Vt., 2001, includes a CD, and talks about Tomatis and how to make music work for you. Leeds is a musician. 3. When Listening Comes Alive, Paul Madaule, Moulin, Ontario, 1994, a good introduction to the basic principles of Tomatis, with practical information for performers and other creative artists. 4. La Clef des Sons, Bernard Auriol, Eres, 1994, Toulouse, If you read French this is a well written book that thoroughly discusses the various uses of sound education and considers Tomatis the most effective method. 5. Music and Miracles, edited by Don Campbell, Quest, 1992, Wheaton Ill. None of the articles that mention Tomatis is geared to musicians, but the discussions can be interesting background. 6. Music, Physician for Time to Come, Dan Campbell, ed., Quest, 1991, Wheaton, Ill. , You probably realize that writing about sound is very difficult, and the article here by Tim Wilson is one of my favorites on Tomatis' work : Chant: The Healing Power of Voice and Ear, an interview with dr. Alfred Tomatis, with commentary. If you are going to choose one piece to read in this list, make this essay the first. 7. The Ear and Language, Alfred A. Tomatis, B. Thompson et al., transl., Moulin, Ontario, 1993, deals with the same sort of thing you will soon find in the Ear and the Voice, but this book is tough sledding, as a literal translation of a hastily written book. If you are intensely curious and prepared to slog, try this. I find it best to read the topic sentences and skip through it. Back to Top |
